Assignment 22 - Kyle Hosey

I like watching/reading a lot of dystopian stuff, so deciding a fictional character to pick was harder than I imagine it was for most people. Almost none of the characters in the books I read growing up had remotely pleasant lives, even if they were exciting and made for a good plot line. Sure Jack Ryan gets to be President, but Tom Clancy makes it pretty clear how much Ryan despises everything about his life outside of his family. Percy Jackson? The first sentence of The Lightning Thief literally tells you to pray you're not a demigod. Anyone from the Hunger Games universe? Hell no. Well, maybe President Snow if anyone, but his upsides (living in a mansion in Denver and getting to watch murder sports) are balanced by having to drink poisoned wines to maintain power. So, I decided to go in a completely different direction. If I could be any fictional character, I would be Al Czervik from Caddyshack. That's this guy.

First of all, I'm sure a lot of you have yet to see this movie. If not, I strongly suggest - demand, even - that you do so this instant. It's easily one of my top-5 comedies. Yes, I'm insanely biased because I love golf and Bill Murray, but still. Al has already made his fortune in real estate, and in the movie joins the exclusive Bushwood Country Club, whose founding members are... less than accepting of his antics. He's loud, boisterous, reckless, and just generally doesn't give a s#&%. He has a stereo integrated into his golf bag, uses a laser-guided putter, and turns everything into a party - even a round of golf. He's rich, has all the free time in the world, gets to play golf every day, and - I can't stress this enough - doesn't give a damn. While all of that makes him a perfect character for an amazing comedy movie, it also makes his life way more attractive than the gritty reality I normally watch and read. Who wants to almost die every day when you could drink, party, and play golf?
