Assignment 4 - Hunter Cole

This photo is from the 60's during the black power movement by Malcom X. The picture two policemen letting their dog attack a high school black boy while he stands calmly. That day many black high schoolers marched the streets of Birmingham, Alabama. The picture shocked Americans because it showed the racism in the south. The policemen were attempting to arrest the boy while he was doing nothing wrong. It helped the movement for racial equality by showing how harsh whites were on blacks in the south. It was a shocking photo because of the brutality that the policemen were taking on the boy while he seemed to be doing nothing wrong. The calmness of the boy also shows that he is tired of the police brutality. It is like he is saying, "here you can have me". The boy and many other marchers that day were jailed for no good reason and were released soon after. The picture was very popular and helped the black power movement in the north and the south.
