September 25th, 1493 Columbus made
his second voyage to the Americas with 17 ships. This was one of Columbus’ 4 voyages that led
to his discovery of the Americas and the home we call the United States today.
The positive and negative effects of this event are still currently discussed
and make Columbus Day a controversial holiday. Columbus brought civilization
and the domestication of the Americas. In opposition, he contributed to
destruction of millions of Native American’s culture and societies. Whether one
sees this event as good or bad is solely up to interpretation.
By creating a large sphere of influence,
Columbus attracted a large number of admirers and also opponents.
Influencing our nation as a hole, Columbus
sparked the development of the Americas and the cultivation of the United
States known today. With his lasting impact on the development of technology,
Columbus brought pieces of Europe to America. Along with these advancements, he
also brought disease and death. The question of Columbus’ influence as positive
or negative continues to stimulate brains today.
