Assignment 5- Tom Polites

While it is a tragedy that Nobel Prize winners are not as highly recognized by the public as Emmy Award winners, TV is still an important part of our world that can't be denied. Some people see TV as mindless entertainment that only hurts people, but this is not how I view it. For me, television provides not only an opportunity for people to forget about the daily grind and to enjoy themselves, but it also provides people with the ability to discuss current events and important issues that face our world.

After a long day, I look forward to coming home and at night watching a new episode of one of my favorite shows. TV allows me to forget about my life for a brief time and enjoy something else with out having to worry about anything. I think that its healthy for everyone to have something like this, whether it be TV, listening to music, going for a run, or reading a book. If you limit your watching and do it in moderation, I think TV is a great way for people to escape for a little bit.

Like most teens, I watch my fair share of Netflix, with Breaking Bad, The Office, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia being my favorite shows. My favorite shows that are currently airing on television are Atlanta and Modern Family. Both of these shows are examples of how television provides a platform for people to speak about social issues. Although Modern Family is a comedy, it deals with accepting your family and others whether they be gay, foreign, or male cheerleaders. Atlanta is also a comedy that portrays three black men living in Atlanta attempting to work their way up through the music industry. This show explores racial issues in our society and other social conundrums. This shows me that TV is not a pointless distraction that rots our brains, but can be a meaningful medium to get a point across.
